The Skinny on Making Your Own Wedding Dress

Dear Sewfie,

I’ve always wanted to make my own wedding dress and now that I am ENGAGED (yeah!), I can’t wait to get started. The problem is, I’m trying to lose weight for the wedding, which is a little less than a year away. I’ve already lost 10 pounds, but I need to lose 30 or 40 more. I can’t decide if I should make my wedding dress the size I am now, or be optimistic and make it the size I hope to be by the time of the wedding. The dress is quite elaborate and will take a long time to make. I work full time and don’t have a lot of time to work on it so I really feel like I should get started soon. My girlfriends say to make it the size I am now and have it tailored later, but I don’t want to have it all hacked up. I’m afraid it would ruin the lines. I don’t know what to do. Help!

– Bride-to-Be

Dear Bride-to-Be,
Your plight reminds me of a graduation dress I once tried to love. It was a beautiful Suzy Chin design that I envisioned in a red chiffon with little white polka dots. Never mind that at 5′ 11.5″ I probably would have ended up looking like a big, scary clown but at the the time I thought this dress was going to be fabulous.

I bought the fabric well in advance of the event but put off starting on it because I was going to lose “just a few more pounds”. You know, so I’d look really good in the dress. The pattern I bought included 3 sizes and I was waffling between the middle size and the smaller size. I waited, and waited, and waited. I never started on the dress. The event came and went. I never made the dress.

I now own this pattern in SIX sizes

THEN, behold, another graduation event gets cued up…. two years later. My chance for redemption! This time, I thought, “Screw this, I never made the dress LAST time and I’ll be damned if I’m going to finally make it only to have the FAT version”. So I bought a new version of the pattern which contained the next 3 smaller sizes of this dress. It should be noted that by now, the pattern was out of print and I had to SEARCH for it on eBay but I did find it and bought the smaller sizes.

Did I ever lose the weight? No. Did I ever make the dress? No. I think you see where I am going with this.

Stop worrying about losing weight in time for the wedding. Fitness is a life long goal and of course you should care about being healthy and fit over the course of your life, but you should NOT worry about quickly losing a lot of weight just to cram into a dress for one day. It’s not healthy and its pretty much impossible anyway.

You are fabulous and beautiful TODAY, the way you look RIGHT NOW. Make the dress is the size you are NOW and rock that dress all the way down the aisle!

Warm Stitches,
